À son retour de l'armée, Jake retrouve sa mère ainsi que son frère et sa belle-famille. Pendant son service sous les drapeaux, son chien militaire, Sunshine, a été renvoyé au repos aux États-Unis. Ally, bénévole au sein de la Société de protection des animaux locale, l'a pris en garde chez elle. Elle tient sa propre pépinière avec sa soeur, Emma, et s'est récemment séparée de Ben, un grand paysagiste. Une cliente Ben confie la réalisation de son jardin à Ally, lui donnant sa première chance en tant que paysagiste. Ben, qui tentait de la reconquérir après leur séparation, le prend très mal. Mais Ally et Jake sont tombés amoureux. Ce dernier et son frère réalisent le chantier d'Ally
