Mallory Dearborn, une jeune auteure à succès, décide de mettre fin à la série de romans à suspense qui a fait sa renommée. Aspirant à écrire un livre plus personnel, elle décide de l'annoncer à Michael, son agent. Il tente alors de la convaincre de continuer et lui propose de prendre quelques jours de repos dans sa grande maison de vacances afin de changer d'air et retrouver l'inspiration
