En vacances en Irak, le légendaire détective belge Hercule Poirot visite un site antique que son ami le capitaine Hastings aide à excaver. Ce qui commence comme un agréable divertissement ne dure pas. Il apprend qu'un ouvrier a été récemment trouvé étranglé. Les tensions s'aggravent quand l'impopulaire épouse de l'archéologue américain Eric Leidner, le chef de chantier, se réveille en poussant des cris dans la nuit, clamant qu'elle a vu un visage mystérieux à la fenêtre.
