Madame Cutler est retrouvée morte chez elle d'une balle dans la bouche, mais les enquêteurs ne constatent aucune trace d'effraction. Son mari, William, demeure introuvable dans un premier temps. On le retrouve plus tard dans son bureau, où tous ses collègues ont été abattus. Après avoir tiré sur un agent de sécurité, Cutler a littéralement perdu la raison et pris une femme en otage.
