Poirot et Hastings se joignent à Japp pour passer l'après-midi dans une fête foraine. Essayant son nouvel appareil de photo, Hastings aperçoit dans le champ le jeune mannequin Molly Deane, attirée derrière une tente par un clown. Plus tard Poirot rencontre Harrison, écrivain-philosophe, fils d'un ami de longue date, qui lui présente Molly comme étant son amie.
